Background of the Study
Web-based language tools, including online courses, interactive modules, and digital language games, are increasingly used to enhance language proficiency. In Enugu, students learning Igbo benefit from these tools as they provide engaging, accessible, and flexible learning environments. These resources offer multimedia content, instant feedback, and adaptive learning paths that cater to diverse learning styles (Nwachukwu, 2023). With the integration of audio-visual materials and interactive exercises, students can practice pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar in a user-friendly interface. Web-based platforms also enable collaborative learning through forums and social media integrations, facilitating peer support and community engagement (Eze, 2024). However, the effectiveness of these tools depends on factors such as technological accessibility, curriculum integration, and the cultural relevance of the content. Recent research has demonstrated that well-designed web-based tools can significantly improve language proficiency and retention among students (Okafor, 2025). This study investigates the impact of these digital tools on Igbo language proficiency among students in Enugu, examining both quantitative outcomes and qualitative user experiences.
Statement of the Problem
Although web-based language tools have been adopted in educational settings, their impact on Igbo language proficiency among students in Enugu is not well documented. Many platforms are designed without sufficient input from local educators, resulting in content that may not fully address the specific learning needs and cultural contexts of Igbo language learners (Nwachukwu, 2023; Eze, 2024). This disconnect can lead to suboptimal learning outcomes and reduced student engagement. Thus, there is a pressing need to evaluate these tools and identify strategies to improve their effectiveness.
